They are rewarded with smiles and hugs and from knowing they helped an individual or family through a hardship or sickness. Individuals who choose to complete a BSN degree have more training in areas that are becoming more of a problem in today’s world. These degrees offer more clinical experience in non hospital settings and help prepare you for better wages and just plain better jobs. I also asked my interviewee about what it took for her educational wise to obtain her degree. She told me that she went straight from high school and obtained her C.N.A license. At that time she thought she would be satisfied with her position but soon came to realize that in her opinion C.N.A‘s were not adequately compensated for their work. Persuasive Essay Free Essays

For generations people of color have been put into a system caste of injustice. From slavery, to the Jim Crow era, and now in today’s society. Today in the United States the incarceration rate has nearly tripled over the years. We will write a custom essay sample on Persuasive Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now With the significant increase in the incarceration rates, it leads you to wonder what the cause may be. The government has found a way to indirectly create another system caste, which we live in today. That system caste is called the mass incarceration, also known as the New Jim Crow. In the mass incarceration one term can describe the whole system of injustice; The Prison Industrial Complex. The Prison Industrial Complex is the overlapping interests of government and industry. It uses surveillance, policing, and imprisonment as solutions to what are, in actuality, economic, social, and political issues (What is the PIC). Although there are many influences that contributes to the Prison Industrial Complex, violence against women, people of color, hatred and fear of immigrants are the secondary influences that primary influences, such as, the War on Drugs, the Stop and Frisk policy, etc. target. The term violence against women encompasses a multitude of abuse directed at women and girls over the life span. Violence against women is any gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual, and/or psychological harm or suffering Violence against Women). Rape is the most common example of violence against women. Rape and sexual assault of women by prison guards is common in the U. S. prisons and jails, with frequent retaliation by officials for those who protest and complain. Majority of women who have been physically abused haven’t been treated properly. Those women tend to cope with their pain by using and abusing drugs, which is why the Prison Industrial complex targets women. There are many ways the government targets immigrants, but it all started September 11, 2001. Since 9/11 the government made it their priority to target immigrant. More specifically those immigrants of color. By using the media to spread their message to the public, that immigrants pose a threat to the United States, immigrants became one of the racial groups targeted by the Prison Industrial Complex (Public Attitudes of Immigrants in the United State, France and Germany). With the attitudes Americans have that all immigrants are terrorist law enforcement, and the government deems it necessary to mistreat them by stripping them of their rights and holding them in detention centers which they are being treated inhumanely (Corrupting Justice). From the War on Drugs, to the Stop and Frisk policy, to the three strike law, etc. these indirectly targets people of color. Stop and Frisk policy is mainly known in the state of New York. Research shows that the stop and frisk policy is of racial bias and unconstitutional. People of African and Spanish descent are stopped and frisk more than Caucasians (An Analysis of the NYPD’s Stop-and-Frisk Policy in the Context of Claims of Racial Bias). It was deemed unconstitutional by a judge named Shira A. Scheindlin stating that the stop and frisk policy violates the 4th Amendment and the 14th Amendment. It also states that law enforcement are racially profiling their suspects. The War on Drugs was initiated in 1980 by the former President Nixon. Since the War on Drugs was enforced sixty percent of people of color have been incarcerated for drug offenses. Some might say that it is a coincidence that such acts are happening to people of color, immigrants, and women. That they aren’t being targeted by the government and law enforcement. Some might even say that by cleaning the streets of the drug abuser or people who pose a threat to the American society, is a good thing. That the law enforcement are doing their jobs. They are creating public safety into communities. That the only reason it seems like the government are targeting these people is because they are mainly doing the crimes, but can you really back those suggestions up with the facts. The media is one of the main reason why the American people are ignorant to the facts. The media is funded by the government. The media portrays, African Americans, Spanish people, Caucasians, and others differently in music, movies, and in the news. In movies you will see that majority of black roles are being ghetto, loud, gangsters, and baby mama, as opposed to few roles of them actually being intelligent and successful. In the news you majority hear how African Americans are being arrested for drugs and violent acts, and justified as their nature as oppose to Caucasian people who were in the news for school shootings, but justify their act of violence as a psychological problem. Different influences in the Prison Industrial Complex are being used to target women, people of color and immigrants. When the government uses the media to make Americans fear a certain race it causes these problems of injustice. When you look at the incarceration rate and the reason they are incarcerated you will understand that the government are not trying help but to profit. Arresting drug users, aren’t solving an issue of their drug problems. Resolving the issues of drugs is finding the reasons people are using drugs. The Prison Industrial Complex is a business between industries and the government. How to cite Persuasive Essay, Essays Persuasive Essay Free Essays â€Å"It’s not Just a game. † to many athletes this statement rings true. Sports fuel the drive and determination within people, and provide them an essential learning tool from which they can grow. We will write a custom essay sample on Persuasive Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Competitive is defined as, â€Å"of or relating to a situation in which people or groups are trying to win a contest or be more successful than other : relating to or involving competition . â€Å"(Merriam-Webster. Com) This concept of competitiveness is the foundation of all sports. The competitive spirit and thirst to ant to better oneself in order to be at the top is a fueling force that will propel our children far beyond their years on the court. Providing children with equal playing time in youth sports discourages the necessary need for healthy competition and takes away valuable life lessons that will prepare them for the future. With over six years of experience coaching girls basketball at the grade school level, the debate over playing time Is one thing that I have encountered a lot. For the most part people are strongly on one side or the other. Although there are other people Like me that agrees with this rule, in most grade school sports this rule has become a mandatory enforced aspect of the game – slowly and forcefully crushing the heart of the competitiveness that so many athletes Join sports for. There are many counterclaim to this debate ranging from psychological harm all the way to it creating the obesity epidemic we are currently facing in our country. One debate that I have heard numerous times is that children learn through playing an actual game verses only in practice. This is ridiculous! To start off, any good player treats practice as Hough it Is a game and puts forth Just as much effort. Coaches demand this Intensity level In practice, so they can adequately prepare their team for the actual games. Practice Is where you learn; games are where you put your skills to the test. If kids actually learned more from games, and the purpose of coaching girl’s basketball at the beginning grade school level was in fact to Children should have to earn their playing time. When we enforce the equal playing time rule we are taking away the goal in which the athletes aspire to achieve. We demise the competitive nature of the port, and destroy the heart of the game. Not everybody can be winners, that is the harsh reality of life! Kids put in the effort in practice in order to win games, therefore the best players should be the ones on the court representing their team. Why even keep score if the important is not who wins? Sports are suppose to be a competition thus they are going to have winners and losers. This teaches the kids the importance of sportsmanship and give them something to work towards. Similar to grades In school, some students earn better grades than others and they are rewarded for It. Sports should not be any different and we should allow the better athletes to shine, excel and be praised for their valuables rather than try and hold them back in order to even out the playing field for other players. No where in life are harder and catch up to the level in which their opponents are at! The physical benefits that some argue are important to implement at such a young age is another argument put forth by the opposing side that I have heard numerous times. They claim that the importance of allowing children to rest in the game is crucial to maintaining their physical health and preventing injuries. The obvious factor in which this statement fails to ring true is that at any level players should be in a good enough physical condition to not only run the full amount of the game but to also be able hustle and go one hundred percent the entire time. This is why practices are usually twice as long as games and any good coach expects their player to hustle throughout every drill. The obesity issue in which parents argue that by benching children it discourages them from playing the sport and thus results in a decrease of physical activity. If the child’s main goal is to get physically fit than they should not be n a team sport. There are many individual sports in which a child can strictly work towards bettering themselves without hurting the rest of the team. If a parent is trying to put their child’s physical well being on the responsibility of their child’s coach that is absurd. A sports season is strictly Just that a season and no coach should have to worry about the child’s physical fitness level during a game. If the coach allows the child practice with the team than by far he has fulfilled his duty. Lastly, the main argument that so many parents think they are Justified in preaching s the physiological harm that is instilled in a child that rides the bench. Lack of self confidence and the feeling of unworthiness are claimed to have a more damaging affect on children than the fairy tale reality that equal playing time blinds them with. Why lie to our children? As parents and coaches we are suppose to prepare kids to excel at the next levels in life. The ability to get back on their feet after being knocked down and make the most out of any situation by far out shines this cushioning effect that parents insist that coaches to provide. This does nothing but Ella the inevitable and handicap our children from learning the correct coping techniques to excel in not only sports but also in life. One of the best basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, has been quoted saying, â€Å"If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. † It is not Just a game, it is a way of life. When the debate over equal playing is brought up the most important thing to remember is to keep the bigger picture in mind. Yes sports at the grade school level do have the task of introducing the fundamentals of the game to individuals but they also carry the ability to teach so much more! Let the sport be the teacher and don’t manipulate the self guided lessons that players will encounter and benefit immensely from. To instill a sense of entitlement rather than a hard working mentality is exactly what giving the children equal playing is doing. Playing time at any level should be something that an athlete has to earn and the competitive spirit within a game should be praised and fueled not manipulated. America has long been the land of freedom and hope to the world, and the American military is what has kept her that way. People have forgotten how important and valuable the military is to the world that we live in. We will write a custom essay sample on Persuasive Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now As part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, automatic sequestration calls for $1. 2 trillion in lowered federal spending, with 50% coming from defense and 50% coming from non-defense budgets. If Congress cannot reach an agreement, these cuts will reduce the Department of Defense spending by about $55 billion dollars. On September 11, 2001, the United States faced a difficult time in which 3,000 lives were lost due to an attack upon the U. S. by terrorists who hijacked airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the United States Pennsylvania! That day, 9/11, has become a day in which we remember the lives that were lost and the families who were affected by such a tragedy. We called on our military once again, and they were there to protect our country. I am against automatic sequestration towards the military and military programs for many reasons. The Department of Defense is already going to have to downsize the military once again due to President Obama’s budget cuts. The Obama administration’s defense strategy has plans to cut $487 billion dollars from the budget. Then, on January 3, 2012 if the sequestration goes into effect, it will strip an additional 10% from the Pentagon’s budget. This will cut about $500 billion from the Defense Department’s budget over the next ten years. In a â€Å"meat axe approach† the mandated cuts will be across the board. There is no special favor for high priority programs. The military had already started the downsize process back in August of 2011. The military is expected to fall from 569,000 active duty soldiers to 426,000 active duty soldiers. It just so happens that in the year 2013 we will have spent roughly the same amount of money that we did in 2007, $472 billion dollars in this war. Even with the budgets cut the United States is still looking at spending the most money compared to the 17 nations combined, and three times more than China. The Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011 requires the federal government to reduce spending by more than $1 trillion by 2021. This amounts to cutting about $109 billion from the budget each year. REFERENCE! Keep double spacing between paragraphs Another reason I am against the cuts is because the military is set in place to defend this nation and control the chaos and the noise that may occur. Our armed force is an organizational structure as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. The United States Army’s role is to maintain ground forces of the United States. The Army’s purpose is to protect and defend the United States by using soldiers on foot, also known as ground soldiers. The Air Force supports the ground troops by providing air power and support while the army moves around on foot. The Navy uses the seas where and when our national interests require it. Also, the Navy will assist the Air Force by carrying some of their aircrafts on board during deployments. The Marine Corps is known as the â€Å"Infantry of the Navy. † They are mostly assault teams and deal with captures and controls. The Marines are a lighter force than the Army they are more self-sufficient than the any other branch. Each branch has unique abilities and training in order to deal with any of threat to our country. Together, they have made us strong. With the military having to make such changes, they are leaving our nation open to more attacks like the one on September 11, 2001. Finally, cutting back on the military budgets will create emotional and financial hardships for those men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving this country. There is always added stress when one has to do the same job with fewer people. It is also a strain when they are not sure of their job security and they know their families are dependent upon them to provide for their needs. A soldier’s job is already a stressful job without this added worry. On top of that, with the lack of good jobs readily available in this economy, it will add an overflow of Americans in need of work. When these good men and women are unable to find jobs to support their families, they will have to seek government assistance and we will be adding an influx of people on an already overstressed and unsustainable unemployment and welfare system. I would much rather have my tax dollars going to pay a working military man or woman. Although I don’t believe in cutting military spending, I realize that we sometimes forget how hard the government has to be on the rules and laws in order to maintain balance and harmony in the world. The government is trying to find a way to get us out of the slum that we are currently in, and get the United States back on its feet economically. Cutting the Department of Defense budget is only temporary, and can be reversed once the government has reached its goal of financial stability. In conclusion, the United States government should rethink the automatic sequestration toward the military funding and payroll cuts. The military is a valuable asset to the U. S. With the budget cuts being taken into effect, the military will be forced to continue its downsizing and lose some resources that help the military families out as well. Yes, the U. S. is possibly going to face another depression, but punishing the soldiers who place their lives and their families’ lives on the line is not fair. Soldiers fight day in and day out not only to have a career, but for the U. S. as well. The budget cut is about financial stability for the United States as a whole. I don’t agree with the military having to be the primary budget cut. You have movie stars and actresses who only pretend to fight in wars and serve this country that are making so much more than the average person. The government has decided that these people whose lives are displayed on television everyday deserve to make more than these soldiers who go overseas and fight day in and day out. Sometimes they are gone for nine months or more, away from their families and friends, and they only get a couple thousand dollars a month. When they return home, they are supposed to act like nothing happened. So many soldiers have lost their lives due to these wars, and some soldiers come back injured and they will never be the same. Sometimes, we forget about the soldiers and what they did and do for us so we can walk around and live the lives that we live. They fight for our freedom each and every day, placing their lives on the line, fighting for our freedom. The least that we can do as free Americans is to stand up and support our military. Thank them for their service, remember them as you go freely about your lives, and not just on Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day. More importantly, let your Congressperson and Representatives know that you do not believe in solving our problems by cutting the budget of our Armed Forces. Good topic, one I know you are passionate about! I again thank you for all you do for the US. Just a few minor things you should do differently. Did you use any references for your statistics? Most people who smoke, feel that non-smokers are against them, and believe in the myths that are portrayed by cigarette companies. We will write a custom essay sample on Persuasive Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now They do not realize how addictive cigarettes are, and end up stuck with the burden. I feel that her entire article is truly opinionated and biased about non-smokers and she really doesn’t have the hard evidence, just personal experience. In â€Å"I’d Rather Smoke Than Kiss,† Florence King states that no matter what American society thinks, says or does, it will not convince her to quit smoking. King’s choice of words suggests that the government purposely tries to segregate all smokers from non-smokers, by making signs or segregating areas for smokers to go. She implies that all non-smokers are against smokers and will do anything in their power to stop them by passing laws. A lot of cigarette companies tell people that if they stop smoking, it will put a strain on the economy, â€Å"Strategies†. King’s article is important because her arguments exemplify different observational situations, which society imposes on smokers in the United States and offers knowledge about some of the issues of discrimination towards smokers by combining personal experience and actual situations that smokers encounter everyday in life. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, â€Å"Strategies†. It causes serious illness among an estimated 8. 6 million persons, it cost $167 billion dollars, in annual health-related losses, and it kills approximately 438,000 people each year. Worldwide, smoking kills about 5 million a year, â€Å"Frieden and Blackman†. Through these statistics, you think people would realize that smoking is not something that should be messed with. Most of the reasons why smokers keep smoking is because they are given myths about the product. The first myth that is pretty common is light cigarettes are less harmful, â€Å"Frieden and Blackman†. By this being said, people continue to buy cigarettes, thinking that light means that the content in the cigarette is low, like how diet soda is. However, there is no standard definition of what constitutes a light or ultra-light brand, and tobacco companies admit that this is used to describe the taste of the product. Secondly, Smokers think that all they lose is a couple of bad years at the end of their life. The average smoker, who dies from tobacco-related causes, loses about fourteen years of life, â€Å"Frieden and Blackman†. Not smoking will extend life and not smoking around other people will extend their lives. The last myth is tobacco is good for the economy. The tobacco industry argues that tobacco creates employment, raises tax revenues, and contributes to the national gross domestic product. They neglect to inform people that in the United States, smoking causes annual economic losses of $167 billion per year, including health care expenses and productivity losses caused by premature death, â€Å"Frieden and Blackman†. So the deaths by tobacco use and expenses for healthcare, out ways buying the product today. In King’s article, she calls non-smokers â€Å"anti-tobacco Puritans, Misanthrope, and Health Nazis. † These are pretty harsh words for somebody to call a large population of people. Name calling such a large group of people is very wrong and offensive. Just because some of the people that she has encountered have tried to restrict her smoking, doesn’t give her the right to bash non-smokers. Although Florence King has a good argument on the way non-smokers treat smokers, she doesn’t use a lot of statistics to convince. Smoking is a person’s choice each person has the freedom to do so, just not around non-smokers. In my opinion, I think that smoking around somebody that doesn’t like it is, rude; if they want to smoke, they can do it in a designated place. Not everybody wants to be around cigarette smoke. In fact, second hand smoke is just as bad as the person smoking cigarettes themselves, â€Å"Strategies†. The biggest thing about smoking is that it is not healthy, and smokers really could benefit from cutting down or even quitting. All through this article, Florence King is unhappy about how smokers are getting treated by non-smokers, and she feels that they are being cornered from all the limitations that have been placed on them. But most of the people in the United States just want to be there and help people quit because they know it is not healthy. They also know that it is very addictive and hard to stop. Smokers have the freedom to smoke. It’s not illegal. However, people who don’t smoke shouldn’t have to sit and breathe all that smoke into their lungs. That just isn’t fair. Who is at fault? These are the thing we will discuss. Recently a lot of people have been in an uproar over sequester and the spending cuts that will automatically take place. What most people fail to understand is that this is not something that happened overnight it has loomed over us for months and our government has failed to take appropriate action to prevent it. We will write a custom essay sample on Persuasive Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now The true effects of sequester are unknown to most, including the government officials that put it in place. Instead of pushing forward and attempting to come to a compromise the parties have decided to engage in a full scale blame war; It can be said however that compromise isn’t needed since the sequester itself is the result of a compromise made months ago in which one side has failed to live up to their end of the bargain. It may be possible that the provisions of sequester may be necessary and actually good for the country. What exactly is Sequester? The Sequester is a series of automatic budget cuts, set to take place on the first of March 2013, signed into law by President Barrack Obama in August 2011. 85 Billion dollars of these cuts are set to occur during the 2013 fiscal year and will continue through 2021 totaling 1. 2 trillion dollars. While sequester calls for across the board cuts to domestic spending as well as defense spending there are certain areas where no spending cuts will be allowed to take place. Spending on wars, military personnel, Funding allocated for Medicaid, Social Security, Pell grants, veterans’ benefits and some low-income programs  are the areas that have been excluded from sequester and therefore cannot be cut. The programs that are exempt from cuts seem to be the ones that both side continue to tell the public will be the first to be cut, this shows either congress themselves do not understand the law or they are deliberately lying to the American public in order to gain political favor (Miller, 2013). How did we get such a position in the first place? In August 2011 President Barrack Obama equested Congress to raise the debt ceiling allowing the country to borrow more money. Upon receiving the request Congress said they would agree to raise the debt ceiling immediately as long as by January 28th 2013 the President would agree to a budget which would cut 1. 2 trillion dollars from the deficit. Failure to find these cuts through a budget would result in a utomatic cuts across the board. The Republican lead House has since put forth several budget proposals and the President has deemed them all unacceptable yet the President himself has failed to put fort ha proposal of his own. This should however come as no surprise as the current administration has failed to agree on a budget since President Obama took office and continues to run on resolutions and borrowed money. This shows that while a deal was made and the Republican lead house held up their end of the bargain by raising the debt ceiling when asked the President has failed to keep his end of the deal. Who is really to blame for this situation? While both major political parties will have you believe that the other is at fault, the truth is there are 4 groups at fault here. The first group at fault is the Republican Party for making a deal in which their end had to be held up immediately while the President had time to plan how to not hold up his end. Secondly the Democratic Party is to blame for knowingly presenting a deal in which they had no intention of holding up their end. Thirdly the President is to blame for signing the bill and agreeing to make the cuts when he himself had no intention of following through on making the necessary cuts. Fourth and perhaps most importantly, we the people, the citizens of the United States are to blame for not keeping our elected officials accountable, for not educating ourselves on the issues, for continuing to vote the same people into congress and expecting a different result, and most importantly for allowing ourselves to be manipulated by party politics (Miron, 2013). It is easy to divide a people once you have made them choose sides, our nation has become polarized to the point that even if we do not agree with someone’s stance we will often side with them because of their party affiliation. We must not allow ourselves to be divided; we must allow our voices to be heard. It is my humble opinion that perhaps we should do nothing about these budget cuts force these bloated government agencies to operate with less. Maybe just maybe these agencies will become more efficient and learn to operate within their means instead of growing themselves for the sake of growth. This may be the hard way to do it but our elected officials have been given the easy way for a long time and now somebody has to pay the piper, will it be painful for a lot of people? Yes it will but the fact remains at some point we must force our government to spend wisely, it is after all our money they are spending supposedly in our best interests. References Miller, L.
